I'd like your input, Preppers and Survivalists for my novel

Preppers, Survivalists and anyone else who’s interested. I need your input for a portion of my next novel, tentatively titled “Fortress Farm.” The premise is as follows. There is a 300 acre farm in a rolling foothill area. The farm has a small vegetable growing section, but is primarily a producer of grass-fed and naturally-fed animals (cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys). There is a small community of survivalists in the local area of the farm that first become customers of the farm, then later decide to form an alliance with the farm as part of their preparedness planning. The alliance’s most important feature will be a plan by the survivalists to bring their families to the farm in the event of an emergency and defend and protect the farm and its protein producing animals to ensure all of their survival in a catastrophe.

What I need for my novel is a full picture for what that preparedness would look like. Assume that the community of survivalists and their allies (including the farmers, their neighbors and converted customers of the farm) number four hundred adults. These adults will have an average to above average level of income. They won’t be “rich”, but they’ll have the money to buy the supplies they want and need generally (if YOU can buy it or get it, they can get it). There won’t be time or money to build any permanent structures on the property, so their preparedness needs to incorporate temporary shelter and a plan for building structures only after the catastrophe strikes. Assume also that this farm is not directly on any major transportation routes, but it is within a half hour’s drive of a major metropolitan area, if you know the back roads.

I assume that the survivalists will see the necessity for the two-lane farm access roads to be barricaded or even destroyed to prevent anyone from getting to the farm should the catastrophe occur, and I would also like to get your ideas on how best to prepare for that necessity ahead of time.

My plan is to include everyone who contributes to this discussion in the acknowledgments at the beginning of Fortress Farm, but more importantly, I think this will be a fun thought exercise for you guys to engage in and I envision a great deal of back-and-forth and even arguments about how best to protect this little farm and the community of survivalists that it will support.

Please post your responses here on my blog or email me your responses at kyle.dane@gmail.com, which I will re-post here (unless you indicate otherwise). I will be asking questions along the way and prodding the discussion wherever I think it’s necessary. Please ask me any questions you might have about the premise, the assumptions or anything else. Have fun! Kyle
