So I'm reading John Wesley, Rawles' "How to Survive the End of the World as we Know It." I'm about halfway through and my first impression was disheartening. Namely that it's completely unrealistic to think I can participate in the program he advocates. Basically, you're supposed to arrange for a retreat or even a full time home that's at least three hundred miles away from a major metro area and make sure it's fully stocked for the End of the World scenarios he presents.
I won't knock the scenarios. As many of you know, my novel Fortress Beverly Hills is one such scenario. The Economy/Society comes crashing down for any of a number of reasons.
Anyway, at first I was just numb. The three hundred miles thing just is not going to work for us, not now. So forget that. Instead I'm thinking about another idea - what can I do to ensure that my little family can hunker down in our current home for one week and survive? I'm going to assume no power, no gas and no running water. Could we do that right now? I'm afraid the answer is probably no. We might have enough food on hand to make do, but I'm not so sure about water. I'm also not confident we'd be warm enough at night without our central heat. These are things I'm going to work on in the coming months - slowly getting to a point where I'm confident we could make it. Then I'll think about the next steps once we're there.
