Second Compost Bin #GBE2
This weekend I fulfilled a recent ambition, to put a second set of small creatures to work for me. A beehive didn't pass muster with the boss. Yeast culturing was a thought, but I'm not much of a beer or wine drinker. Instead I decided to mimic my original creature work program, my worm bin. I drilled holes in a former storage bin and loaded it with dirt and miscellaneous plant and food wastes to attract black soldier flies and their hardworking larvae. Next to curb my inveterate tinkering and let mother nature do her work.

My oldest daughter and her family compost, have an organic garden, and try to live pretty green. They've replaced all commercially prepared cleaners with homemade ones made from simple, earth-friendly ingredients and have reduced their use of throw-away stuff dramatically. They are the goal...I'm nowhere near as good as they are, but I'm working on it.

I have a small composter...and I'll tell you that makes nice rich fertile soil. I am no where near organic by any stretch of the imagination...but I try to do a little here and there!! Cheers, Jenn

I adore this! I've always been fascinated with the "society" of ants. Yes, ants are amazing creatures. You may not want them in your pantry, but they work together and are pretty amazing insects. We can take a lesson from them...even with our differences; whether you're a queen, worker ant or whatever other kind of ant there is - they work together for the better of their collective colony. Love that you got your hands in the dirt and handling those slimy creatures. I used to handle worms all the time with my Dad when we would go "old school" fishing!
I commend you for being so green. I'm not much of an outdoor person, so I don't compost.
Interesting! Sorta not into doing all that, but I do love growing our tomatoes each year. ;-)
